GSL was officially incorporated
as a society in 1991 by Geshe Ngawang
Kalden. Geshe Kalden was a Tibetan monk who escaped to India in 1959 following His Holiness the Dalai Lama, shortly after the invasion of Tibet by the Communist Chinese.
After living many years in India as a refugee and being forbidden to ever acquire citizenship from the Indian government, Geshe Kalden emigrated to Canada and subsequently founded GSL in 1986.
For 11 years, the members and guests of Gaden Samten Ling met in each others houses and basements for regular meditation sessions and, in the process, incorporated as a society in 1991.
Upon Geshe Kalden's advice, in October of 1997 GSL bought a modest little house on a corner lot in Edmonton, to serve as the society's Dharma (Teaching) Centre.
Geshe Kalden passed away four months later.
The group's Board of Directors and members continued with their regular meditation sessions and carried on with the Society's charitable activities such as the yearly Tibetan Bazaar.
In March of 2000, our present resident teacher, Kushok
Lobsang Damchöe joined us. Throughout its history, Gaden
Samten Ling has sponsored visiting venerable Tibetan Lamas to give
teachings to the people of Edmonton.
